Steamboat History

Steamboat got its name when 3 French fur trappers thought they heard the sound of a steamboat only to discover it was the noise made by the bubbling hot springs.  Years later, the Crawfords, who were the founding family of Steamboat Springs, arrived in the Yampa Valley in 1875.  Known for their hospitality, the Crawfords were able to obtain title to their claim by making a fine dinner for the surveyor and treating him like a King.  Thirty-seven years later, Majorie Perry made the aquantaince of Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelson.  Majorie invited Howelson to her home in Steamboat, and he was so impressed by the Yampa Valley that he decided to make it his home.  Carl Howelson brought recreational skiing to the area which led to the first Winter Carnival in Steamboat.  A winter sports club developed and eventually Steamboat got its nickname, "Ski Town USA."
